Book an hour
A physiotherapist working on a patient's shoulder

Buderim, Queensland

One patient an hour. Every hour.

No double-booking, no being handed to an assistant halfway through, no photocopied exercise sheet at the door. Sixty minutes, hands on, with the same physiotherapist every visit.

Where it hurts

Point at it.

Most people don't know whether their problem is a physio problem. Select the area and we'll tell you honestly, including when you'd be better off seeing someone else.

Your first session

What the hour actually looks like.

00 minutes in 1 of 5
00 — 12 min

You talk, we listen

What happened, what makes it worse, what you've already tried, and what you're actually trying to get back to. Nobody types into a computer with their back to you.

12 — 25 min

Assessment

Movement, strength, and the specific tests that separate the three or four things it's likely to be. You'll be told what we're ruling out, and why.

25 — 30 min

The explanation

In plain English, with the diagram if it helps. If we don't know yet, you'll be told that too, along with what would tell us.

30 — 50 min

Hands-on treatment

Twenty minutes of actual manual therapy: soft tissue, joint mobilisation, dry needling if it's indicated and you're comfortable with it.

50 — 60 min

Two or three things to do

Not twelve. Two or three exercises you'll actually remember, sent to your phone before you've reached the car park, plus what to expect over the next week.

Why we're different

The twenty-minuteappointment is abusiness decision.

It isn't a clinical one. Booking three patients an hour across two rooms earns a clinic roughly double what we earn, and it's why so many people have been through four sessions of the same ultrasound and left none the wiser.

We charge more per visit and see fewer people. In return you get an hour of somebody's actual attention, and most patients need fewer visits because of it. That's the whole model. There isn't a catch.

  • Sixty minutes, every appointment

Initial and follow-up. The clock doesn't change because you're a return patient.

  • Hands on, every session

If a session is only exercise prescription, we'll tell you beforehand so you can decide whether it's worth the trip.

  • The same physio, every time

Northbay is a single-practitioner practice. You will not be reassigned.

Fees

All of it, upfront.

Every appointment is sixty minutes. There is no separate "long consultation" price because there is no short one.

Who you'll see

Daniel Mercer

B.Physio (UQ) · APA Member · Dry Needling Cert.

I spent six years in a clinic that booked me three patients an hour. I was good at it, and I was still sending people home without having properly worked out what was wrong. Northbay is the practice I wanted to work in.

Fourteen years in practice. Mostly necks, lower backs, shoulders and knees. Particular interest in people who have been told nothing more can be done, because that is almost never true.

If I can't help you, I'll say so in the first session and tell you who can.

Ring the practice. Daniel answers it himself between patients, and if he can't, he calls back the same day.

No. Physiotherapy is a primary contact profession in Australia, so you can book directly. You only need a referral if you're claiming through Medicare on a Chronic Disease Management plan, through DVA, or under WorkCover.

Some of it, sometimes, briefly. Manual therapy on an irritable joint can be uncomfortable while it's happening. Nothing is done without telling you first, and "stop" means stop immediately, every time.

You'll get an honest estimate at the end of the first one, and we'd rather under-promise. Most straightforward problems take three to five sessions. If you're not measurably better by the third, we change the plan or refer you on. We don't sell packages of ten.

Something you can move in and that lets us see the area. Shorts for knees and hips, a singlet or t-shirt for shoulders and necks. There are gowns and a private change space if you'd prefer.

Yes, when it's indicated, and never as the whole session. It's optional, it's explained first, and plenty of people decline it and get better anyway.

Then you'll be told, and told quickly. Most musculoskeletal problems don't need imaging and scans often show things that aren't causing your pain. When one is genuinely warranted, we'll write to your GP the same day.

Often, yes, and it's most of what we do. Long-standing problems need the hour more than anything else does, which is the reason the practice is set up this way.
